Hellooooo Lady Kay. I'm wondering what you know about the Paleo diet(following a meal plan identical to that of our ancestors from the Paleolithic Era). I'm a 17 year old female who is 5'9, 158 lbs with 28% body fat. At the beginning of this year I vowed to become fit. I started by doing the Master Cleanse to cleanse my system, build discipline, and see some results. That was excellent motivation but now I want a meal plan that I can stick to for the long run. What is your take on Paleo? Thanks!

Soooo I am not the paleo expert because I am vegetarian and a diet that relies so heavily on meat is not something I’ve looked into at all!! I also won’t say that I can agree completely with it because I obviously have my own opinions about meat being healthy—which are probably obvious enough based on my desire not to eat it. 

I will give you completely unsolicited advice and tell you that I don’t think the Master Cleanse is healthy at all!!! Any diet that tells you NOT TO EAT FOOD is a terrible idea!! What the hell kind of diet says “you should drink this awful mix of water and maple syrup and cayenne to lose weight”?!? EAT FOOD. EAT REAL FOOD!! 

We should eat to make ourselves healthy—not to look a certain way or because we have to hit some “goal weight”. Don’t fall into the trap of numbers. I’ve played that fucking game before. Eat because you are strong and beautiful and healthy and you deserve to put food in your body that makes you strong and beautiful and healthy. 

Here’s my “rules of healthy eating” 

  • EAT FOOD
  • EAT REAL FUCKING FOOD
  • EAT REAL FUCKING FOOD MOSTLY MADE FROM PLANTS
  • Eat food made from words you can pronounce 
  • Make it yourself instead of buying it at a store 
  • Eat when you’re hungry
  • Eat lots of different colors on your plate—purple eggplant and green spinach and yellow peppers. 
  • Green things—all the green things. 
  • Branch out—try curry or pad thai or arepas or sushi!
  • Get your protein from “lean protein sources” like soy or eggs or chicken or fish instead of higher fat sources. 
  • Cut processed sugar—ditch the soda and the oreos. If you need something sweet make it yourself in your own kitchen!! I can guarantee that something made with real butter and real cream is 800% better for you than something made with a laundry list of chemicals.
  • If it’s white, switch it for brown! White bread? Try wheat. White rice? Try brown.
  • Drink water. All the water. All day. All the time. Drink tons of it.
  • Don’t believe anyone that promises you a quick fix. 
  • Eat reasonable portions—put it on a smaller plate. Fill the plate with veggies. Just because it got served to you does not mean you have to eat all of it in one go.
  • Treat yourself!! Everyone needs a little sweet stuff sometimes. 
  • EAT FOOD 
  • EAT REAL FUCKING FOOD 
  • EAT REAL FUCKING FOOD THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY AND HEALTHY

I have no right to tell anyone what to eat or what not to eat. I am by no means a diet expert. I am not a doctor. 

You have to eat what you think makes you feel good!! If the food you put in your body makes you feel happy and energized and healthy—keep eating it!! If it makes you feel terrible—ditch it! Eat the food that makes you healthy!! So, if paleo fits that bill—do it!! 

I will say that I like paleo’s influence on eating food that is real food from real sources and cutting out processed junk. :) I personally couldn’t live with that much meat and no bread but that’s what works for me!! :) I certainly like that paleo encourages people to work on eating foods that are made from actual food and not the chemicals found in yoga mats or trans fats. 

I can promise you that fad diets like the “master cleanse” will come and go, but eating things like spinach and bananas and kale and strawberries and tomatoes and carrots will never stop being good for you
